Directions
The starting point of the tour is Kassel's Kulturbahnhof. Along the river Ahne you reach Vellmar, where the Ahnepark offers a first breather. Now the bike path leads up to Dörnberg in the Habichtswald Nature Park. Here it is worth visiting the nature park center with its changing exhibitions and extensive information about the nature park. As you continue, you will cross the region with its characteristic basalt rocks, stream valleys and small lakes. About halfway along the route, you can make a detour to the Zierenberg district of Burghasungen with its monastery museum. The route continues via the half-timbered town of Wolfhagen to Ippinghausen, past Weidelsburg Castle and along the Elbe stream valley to the Waldecker Land region. Here, with the Edersee, the conclusion and highlight of the bike tour is reached. The ancient beech forests on the southern shore of the lake are officially considered a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. The crystal clear water of the lake invites you to a variety of leisure activities. The Kassel-Edersee Cycle Path leads through hilly terrain with some steep inclines. This makes it interesting for cyclists who want to prove their sporting skills. The route runs on mostly paved forest and field paths, sometimes on busy public roads. Those who do not want to cycle back along the same route can cycle from Lake Edersee along the Eder Cycle Path to Baunatal-Guntershausen and from there return to Kassel along the Fulda Cycle Path.
If you want to avoid the inclines at the beginning of the cycle path, you can take the RegioTram to Wolfhagen; from there you can continue comfortably by bike to Lake Edersee. Free bike transport in the area of the North Hessian Transport Association (NVV), www.nvv.de.
