The Tour de Chattengau takes us through the basalt hills of northern Hesse, a region with a very special character.

Here, between Kassel and Fritzlar, striking mountain cones rise from the fertile plain, reminiscent of mole hills on a field. These basalt mounds are witnesses of long past volcanic activity.

Many uninhabited, natural areas of the Chattengau belong to the Habichtswald Nature Park.

This includes the wooded Langenberg between Besse and Metze, which we cross. On our tour we cycle through charming half-timbered villages, quiet forest areas and productive farmland, which has already been settled by the first people who settled in Central Europe.

During the annual cycling festival “Tour de Chattengau”, this section is closed to cars. The tour offers numerous stops and resting places with wide views over the country.
