Time Capsule
Preserving cultural objects in times of extreme danger
For documenta 13 in 2012, the Lebanese artist Akram Zaatari had a symbolic time capsule buried on the banks of the Fulda. It contains 32 colorfully painted wooden objects. Only a construction made of structural steel protrudes from the ground as a visible marker above ground. With his "Time Capsule", Zaatari alludes to the protection of cultural assets in times of threat. During the civil war in Lebanon (1975-1990), the National Museum of Beirut had its archaeological treasures walled in and sealed with concrete. This protected them from destruction.
