The artwork "Ein Granitblock" (A Granite Block) by Ulrich Rückriem, erected for documenta 7 in 1982, stands on the open-air site next to the Museum Neue Galerie.
A closed block of manageable clarity occupies the axis of the Schöne Aussicht between Friedrichsplatz and the classicist "Breakfast Pavilion".

The title of the work succinctly names the steps the sculptor has taken on the stone. The minimalist cube invites the viewer to retrace the aforementioned working methods and to understand the processes of injury along with the process of undoing. For the elementary techniques of splitting and cutting have remained visible as scars in the form of drilled holes, broken edges and cut lines on the otherwise unworked surfaces.

Rückriem's handling of his granite block represents a sculpture that does not destroy its material by imposing the artist's will on it. Instead, it wants to respectfully help it find its own expressive effect in the search for lost wholeness.
