A granite block

documenta-artworks
The artwork "Ein Granitblock" (A Granite Block) by Ulrich Rückriem, erected for documenta 7 in 1982, stands on the open-air site next to the Museum Neue Galerie.
In search of the lost wholeness

Splitting - cutting - joining together: The use of elementary stonemasonry techniques is typical of sculptor Ulrich Rückriem's working method. The conspicuous drill holes and traces of processing make the working process visible. They were created during the splitting of the block of rock and its extraction in the quarry. The installation of the granite sculpture - in 1982 for documenta 7 - next to the Neue Galerie creates a visual axis and an aesthetic counterpoint to the classicist breakfast pavilion at the Schöne Aussicht. In this way, the work and its surroundings enter into a relationship with each other.
