The sound installation "Three to One" by Max Neuhaus, created for documenta 9 in 1992, can be heard in the stairwell of the AOK Hessen - Beratungscenter Kassel-City.
The striking staircase with its glass exterior walls in one of the earliest architectures of Kassel's post-war reconstruction was considered by Jan Hoet to be the backbone of his exhibition topography. Max Neuhaus filled this central location with an electronically generated sound installation. It develops in slight modifications over three floors. Each level is assigned its own continuous tone, each is characterised by an individual timbre.
Without visible elements, the "Sound Work" unfolds a sound structure that takes place at the limit of perceptibility. In that its level is only slightly above the background noise of the outside world, it demands a sharpening of perception and sensitivity for the acoustic offer. Listening closely, the traffic areas expand into a meditative spatial experience in a sphere removed from time.
