171.00 km long
Cycling tour

The Eder Cycle Route, which has been awarded 4 stars by the ADFC as a quality cycle route, accompanies the Eder on its journey through beautiful landscapes in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse.

On quiet cycle paths and farm tracks, the 171 km long Eder Cycle Path follows the Eder River from Erndtebrück (NRW) through the Waldecker Land region to where it flows into the Fulda River and on to Baunatal-Guntershausen. The route runs through a charming and varied low mountain range landscape.

Those who would like to take in the Eder spring can cycle from Lützel to Erndtebrück via a feeder road to the Eder cycle path (signage E with reference to the spring).

After the start in Erndtebrück, the route leads through the Rothaargebirge Nature Park to Bad Berleburg. Here a detour to the prince's castle is worthwhile.

From there, the route crosses the state border at Beddelhausen on the asphalted old railroad line and continues through a 350-meter tunnel to Battenberg-Dodenau. In Hesse, the Eder accompanies you for 133 kilometers. The Eder takes you to old half-timbered towns. So you also cycle through Frankenberg, where the ten-tower town hall is one of the outstanding sights. The route continues through magnificent beech and spruce forests, across lonely meadows, past mountain streams and quiet ponds. Shortly before Vöhl-Herzhausen, the Kellerwald National Park Center with a modern interactive exhibition about the national park is located on the right side. From there, continue on the Eder cycle path.

The highlight is the Edersee with the adjacent Kellerwald-Edersee National Park with UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the way along the cycle path you will find the treetop path and the WildTierpark Edersee where wolves, lynxes, bison, wildcats and other animals are at home. Passing the Edersee dam through the Eder valley, the old cathedral and imperial city of Fritzlar awaits your visit. The route continues to Felsberg, where Felsburg Castle towers almost majestically on a 200-meter basalt cone, and past Böddiger Berg, Hessen's northernmost vineyard.

In Grifte the Eder flows into the Fulda, here a stop is worthwhile. From there it is about 2 km to Baunatal-Guntershausen. At the beautiful railroad viaduct the Eder cycle path ends with the transition to the Fulda cycle path/R1.

The Eder-Radweg always runs close to the river on partly quiet farm tracks as well as an asphalted old railroad line.
Natural ground and asphalt alternate. Combined with slight gradients, this route is basically suitable for all bicycle tourists.
