Delicious and creative: Interview with Mio and Kilik from the ice cream parlor "Frohnatur"

If you fancy a refreshing organic ice cream, Wilhelmshöher Allee 18 is the right place for you: Mio and Kilik Gieseler are always offering new ice cream specialties. Vegan, gluten-free, organic - this is how they have been making their guests happy for four years now.

  • Kilik and Mio, you are the owners. Would you like to briefly introduce yourselves?

Mio: Sure, of course! My husband Kilik and I are both 29 years old and come from Staufenberg near Kassel. We've known each other forever. Our dream is to be self-employed together - on May 1, 2019, it came true with the opening of our ice cream parlor! We are both originally trained tailors.

  • What characterizes "Frohnatur"?

Kilik: Quite a lot: we are certified organic and our ice cream is made from purely natural ingredients. We consistently avoid using labels from well-known brands. We even make our own ice cream cones, croissants and sauces. Our ice cream is vegan and gluten-free so that everyone can enjoy it equally. We enjoy surprising our guests with new creations and ice cream flavors. We also provide delicious winter ice creams in winter!

Mio: It is also very important to us to offer a save space for the lgbtq community. We know 90 percent of our customers by their first names. Another special feature of Frohnatur is that we illustrate our ice-cream menus ourselves.

  • Please describe Kassel in three sentences!

Kilik: Kassel is a great size and you have the chance to get to know the whole city. Secondly, you can really feel at home here.

Mio: And thirdly, there is a lot of greenery!

  • Do you have a favorite neighborhood?

Mio: We like Unterneustadt. It's cozy, not overcrowded and the area is beautifully situated by the Aue and Fulda rivers. It's great for a walk, but not so much for shopping.

  • Do you have a real insider tip for our visitors to Kassel?

Kilik: If you take a walk through the Aue at around half past eight in the evening, you'll see raccoons swarming around. They are the trademark of Kassel. They come very close to you - but watch out and be considerate of the animals.

  • And what are your tips for shopping away from the well-known labels?

Mio: We like going to the Nachfüllbar Kassel. You can shop there in an environmentally conscious and plastic-free way.

Kilik: We can also highly recommend the tattoo studio Goldruß and Fabrik 7. The Comic Galerie is a must for manga nerds like us. Wild Wood Gallery & Store is also worth a visit!

  • When you long for a break in your everyday life, where do you go?

Mio: Apart from the Frohnatur ice cream parlor, you are most likely to find us away from the crowds. You can quickly recharge your batteries in one of the beautiful parks - Aue, Bergpark or Dönche, for example.

Kilik: And when it comes to food and drink, we also feel right at home in the Bistro Stadt-Land-Fluss, the b2 Bar Lounge and the Indian restaurant Bashis Delight.

  • Thank you both for the interview!
