The artwork "Das über Pflanzen ist eins mit ihnen" by Lois Weinberger, planted for documenta 10 in 1997, runs along track 1 of the Kulturbahnhof.
Lois Weinberger's documenta biotope looks like a neglected area of the Kulturbahnhof. In the ballast bed of the disused track 1, the artist mixed the existing vegetation with neophytes from southern and south-eastern Europe. The unnoticed, seemingly unusable vegetation is provided with a space for its development. An area as a gap in the urban, where borders are in a constant state of upheaval.
Weinberger sees this botanical process, which is still ongoing, as a metaphor of social processes. Here, the worldwide migration process becomes the subject of an ecological work of art. In a natural development that has been artificially brought about, the artist uses the example of the plant world to problematise the conflict-ridden relationship between foreign and native. The understanding of nature should enable the understanding of society. For Weinberger, the way a society deals with plants is a reflection of itself.
