On the portico of the former Red Palace, a group of people in colourful folkloric clothing have arrived with their improvised luggage: perplexed-looking figures of visibly different ethnic and geographical origins. The seemingly naïve portrayal of the strangers embodies exclusion and a lack of social integration. As socially marginalised figures, they gaze with downcast eyes in their precarious situation at the activity of the square below them, without being able to participate in urban life.
Due to the worldwide events of flight and migration, Schütte's sculpture group has become increasingly socio-politically topical since its installation. The original twelve-part arrangement can also be seen as a contemporary counterpart to the six classicist portico allegories of the neighbouring Museum Fridericianum.
