The Rotunda - Upper City Gate and Memorial Site

The Rotunda was built at the beginning of the 16th century and is the only remaining part of the Upper Town Gate, to which the medieval fortification ring of the town was connected.

In 1776, the city gate was demolished due to the extension of today's Kasseler Straße. The rotunda remained and was used in the 19th century as a storage room for a brewery, among other things.

Today, the rotunda serves as a memorial to the fallen of the First and Second World Wars and the victims of the violence from 1933 to 1945.
