The Museum Fridericianum was founded in 1779 by order of Landgrave Frederick II as one of the world's first public museums. Since 1988 it has been an internationally renowned art gallery. On more than 2000 square metres of exhibition space, a broad spectrum of contemporary art is shown: from new discoveries to established positions. Since 1955, the 100-day documenta has been held here every five years and will open its doors for the 17th time in 2027.
In between the documenta exhibitions, the Fridericianum and the Kasseler Kunstverein occupy the building. It is open for the respective special exhibitions.
