The Kasseler Kunstverein was one of the first of its kind and was founded in 1835 as an independent forum for the promotion and mediation of contemporary art. It stands in the tradition of civic engagement. The programme is developed and realised by the board of directors on a voluntary basis. One focus is on solo exhibitions by national and international artists. The spectrum ranges from spatial installations and sculptures to painting, media art and performance. The artistic examination of social issues is the point of reference for all exhibitions.
Every five years, the Kasseler Kunstverein makes its traditional rooms in the Museum Fridericianum available to the documenta and moves into a temporary domicile.
