Me, the animal.

exhibition
From the evil wolf to Donald Duck - the current special exhibition shows animals in comics. Meet heroes and anti-heroes, adversaries and helpers, loyal companions or enchanted humans until April 12, 2026.
From August 22, 2025 to April 12, 2026

Whether in Grimm's fairy tales or in contemporary comics - animals play very important roles in them. They are heroes or anti-heroes, adversaries or helpers, loyal companions or enchanted people. Their depictions often serve as a projection screen for human characteristics. And stories with human-like animal characters invite us to reflect on the real, everyday coexistence of humans and animals.

As an extremely popular medium, comics offer particularly impressive depictions and have turned many animal characters into "stars". Original drawings, sketches and studies as well as merchandise provide an insight into the humor, the art of drawing and the history of comics right up to the present day.

Animals characterize the comics with their respective, characteristic traits - whether bad luck Donald Duck, the lazy, gluttonous Garfield or the wolf from "Fables", with borrowings from Grimm's fairy tales. Picture sheets from the 19th century are among the precursors of comics and present animals as fairy tale heroes, role models and even role clichés.

In the exhibition, you can meet numerous animal figures from the world of comics, create your own comics or transform yourself into an animal. Children receive the accompanying booklet "Rätselspur" (puzzle trail) free of charge so that they can also get creative at home with the world of comics, Donald Duck, Garfield and fairy-tale animal characters.
