Every graffiti sprayer knows that at some point the next person will come along and paint over the image. No matter how good it was. This may also have been Daniel Man's experience. The artist has made the overlaying of images a design principle in this mural. The mural from 2017 consists of several pictures that are layered on top of each other. Colours and shapes vary. The artist has painted over each layer with a new motif. Through stencil-like recesses, a piece of the previous picture layer remains visible. The last layer in light red is reminiscent of a royal coat of arms or eagle wings.
The humorous title "It was better before" perhaps also refers to the artist's biography. Born in London in 1969, the artist grew up in Hong Kong and Germany. Daniel Man studied fine arts and today exhibits in important museums and galleries. However, he began on the street. He has been known as a graffiti artist under the name "Codeak" since the 1980s. He has never completely given up street art and gladly accepted KolorCubes' invitation to Kassel.
The artwork is part of the project "Public Art Gallery" by KolorCubes.
This mural is also included in the audio tour "Streetart in Kassel" on izi.Travel. The tour was made possible by the cdw Foundation.
