The Glass Museum in Immenhausen is one of the few specialized museums for glass in Germany. It was opened in 1987 by the city of Immenhausen in the converted generator building of the former Süßmuth glassworks.
The museum showcases the glassmaking tradition of Northern Hesse and Southern Lower Saxony in the Middle Ages and early modern times, as well as modern international studio glass art. Glass objects, photos, and texts make the history of Immenhausen's glassmaking tradition come alive. The museum's own collection of modern glass art objects, with over 300 artworks from 1970 to the present, is one of the largest of its kind in Germany. It provides insight into the fascinating world of glass art and demonstrates the endless possibilities of glass.
Special attention is given to the prominent glass entrepreneurs Hermann Lamprecht and the namesake of the last glassworks in Immenhausen, Richard Süßmuth. Richard Süßmuth is an internationally renowned German glass artist whose works have received numerous awards. He came to the city as a displaced Silesian and operated the glassworks, which now houses the museum.
In addition, changing special exhibitions feature international art.
