It is the remains of the Naumburg Castle and the legendary Weidelsburg that connect the Extratour through the Elbe Valley. Hikers discover the Middle Ages, where legends and fairy tales sought explanations, and then experience a vibrant and diverse cultural landscape in the present.

The centerpiece of historical retrospectives is the Weidelsburg, whose well-preserved ruins have much to tell us. The magnificent view of the historically significant landscape reveals the former strategic importance of the fortress. Knotty orchards on the slopes of the castle hill and young fruit orchards in the Elbe Valley entice with their variety of varieties.

The half-timbered backdrop of Naumburg vividly tells tales from the past and impresses with imaginative carvings. The Habichtswaldsteig leads up through old gardens and a magical forest to the edge of Burghain, where the castle once defied conquerors. Exciting stories await at the Weingartenkapelle with its Stations of the Cross, at the Bildstein as part of the Geopark GrenzWelten, at the basalt columns in the Weidelsberg quarry, and at the fairytale resting place "Junge Riesen" (Young Giants). On their tour through the Valley of Two Castles, hikers experience themselves as young or old, small or large, and always curious for discoveries.

Enchanting: Weidelsburg, Old Town of Naumburg with Burgberg, Bildstein, Weingartenkapelle, Frog Prince Fountain

Natural highlights: Elbe Middle Mountain Stream, floodplain landscape, natural beech forest, orchards, bumblebee workshop (-zoo), herb garden, blue garden

The designated tour starts at Burghain and initially leads over Burgberg with individual information boards to the archaeological site of the castle that gives the tour its name. It was once built as a new castle to replace the Weidelsburg and towered over the town (new castle - Nuweburg - Naumburg). From here, you descend through the historic old town into the Elbe Valley. You will go around the town parish church to the left and then pass the supplier entrance at the end of Burgstraße, near the Edeka supermarket. At first, it might seem like a private path. The Habichtswaldsteig practically follows the old city wall at this point. Upon reaching the Elbe Valley, you turn left and follow the Elbe until you reach the second Edeka supermarket. After crossing the main road, you continue to the right behind a row of houses towards Weingartenkapelle, which offers a magnificent view of the historic old town. The path continues beyond Weidelshof into Mühlenholz with the natural monument Bilstein and Elbe floodplain. This is an idyllic section before the ascent up to Weidelsburg. A rest at the fairy tale resting place Baumelbank is recommended at the halfway point. The final ascent to Weidelsburg can be undertaken, and the reward is a splendid 360° panoramic view of the Habichtswald Nature Park, including Dörnberg, Essigberg in the high Habichtswald, Hessenturm near Niedenstein, and the Waldeck Castle at the Edersee. The descent leads through a beautiful beech forest in serpentine paths, passing by the quarry "Katzenloch" with a barbecue hut, and continuing towards Naumburg. The tour can be wonderfully interrupted at Café Hasenacker, where you can recharge for the last kilometers. Along the way, you pass a fruit orchard with variety signs, pass by the resting place Brederich with a bookable trekking spot, and once again walk through a beech forest before reaching Burghain from behind through an apple avenue.
In the village, you can conclude the hiking day in the local gastronomy.
