Wahlebachpark

In the 1960s and 1970s, rivers and streams were straightened, piped, or built over. Even the Wahlebach—which gives the project its name—flowed through eastern Kassel as a completely enclosed canal until the early 2000s. Then, starting in 2005, it was restored to a near-natural state under the leadership of Kassel’s drainage authorities. A large stand of trees had already lined the Wahlebach in the past. Since 2021, the green corridor has been extensively redesigned and significantly enhanced. When the work is expected to be completed in 2026, one of Kassel’s largest green spaces will have been created. Here, natural and urban spaces are interconnected in an exemplary manner.
