The Marstall is the oldest museum and library building in the city. Today, the building houses the city archive and the media centre. At the same time, the historic complex serves as a market hall for Kassel's weekly market.
Landgrave Wilhelm IV the Wise had this complex built in the Weser Renaissance style from 1591-1593. Only the ground floor of the stables served its actual purpose, the accommodation of princely horses. On the upper floor were the art and rarities chamber, a room for scientific experiments, a print shop and a mint. In 1633 Landgrave Wilhelm IV also moved his precious library from the Renthof to the Marstall.
