Spohr Museum

Louis Spohr was one of the most influential musicians of the 19th century. From 1822 to 1857, he served as court conductor in Kassel.

Personal belongings and instruments shed light on Spohr’s life and work and draw connections to his musical output. Spohr composed operas, symphonies, chamber music, and violin concertos. He was a violin virtuoso—alongside the Italian Niccolò Paganini, he is considered one of the greatest violinists of his time—and a teacher; he influenced orchestral culture and modernized instrument making. A variety of hands-on activities encourage visitors to engage actively with this exceptional musician.

The museum highlights Louis Spohr’s significance for his era and builds bridges to the present. For example, alongside the beer tap and furnishings from the iconic “Mutter” bar, you’ll also find punk songs from the ’80s to listen to.
