zoo/animal park

Below the fairy-tale castle Sababurg, directly next to the impressive primeval forest, lies the 130 ha large zoo Sababurg in the middle of the Reinhardswald.

The Sababurg Zoo is one of the visitor magnets in the Reinhardswald Nature Park and the oldest zoo in Germany still preserved in its original area. At the foot of the Sababurg - home of Sleeping Beauty - 80 different animal species are at home. More than 900 animals find a home on the 130 ha large area.

Whether it's the primeval game park, children's zoo, bird of prey station or Ark Park with its accompanying farm, there's plenty to experience, discover and learn at Sababurg Zoo: feed goats, rabbits, woolly hogs or budgies, watch wild boar freshlings play, watch wild horses and white deer graze or go in search of the shy wolves and lynxes....

The zoo museum also provides exciting insights into the history and everyday life of the zoo as well as interesting facts about the different animal species. And if you get hungry, there are various gastronomic offers available.

Open for you all year round - 7 days a week

The zoo is open for you every day of the year! On different days around the year, events are offered, such as the summer festival, the medieval spectacle, the Christmas market or theme days, for example, about the wolf or the honey bee... There are also regular show feedings, bird of prey flight shows and other animal experiences, which you can also book individually.

About the history of the zoo

In 1571 Landgrave Wilhelm IV began to establish the zoo, one of the first zoos in Europe, at the foot of his hunting lodge Sababurg. In the course of its history, the zoo has been used for a variety of purposes, alternating and sometimes coexisting. For example, it was used as a hunting ground or as a pasture for horses and young cattle. Many testimonies of this long and eventful history have been preserved until today. The zoo wall and the ponds date back to the time when the zoo was founded. The traffic circle and the outgoing avenues were laid out in the 17th and 18th centuries. Spacious pastures with the old hay oaks and the hay meadow were laid out in the 19th and 20th centuries for horses, young cattle and sheep and are still preserved today.
