The Sababurg Zoo is one of the visitor magnets in the Reinhardswald Nature Park and the oldest zoo in Germany that is still preserved in its original area. At the foot of the Sababurg castle - home of Sleeping Beauty - you can discover around 80 different animal species. In total, more than 900 animals live in the 130 ha large area.
Whether it's the primeval game park, children's zoo, bird of prey station or Ark Park with its accompanying farm, there's plenty to experience, discover and learn at Sababurg Animal Park: feed goats,or rabbits, watch wild horses and white deer graze or discover shy wolves and lynxes.
The park museum also provides exciting insights into the history and everyday life as well as interesting facts about the different animal species. If you get hungry, there are various gastronomic offers available.
Open all year round - 7 days a week
The animal park is open for you every day of the year! Additionally, several events take place during the year, such as the summer festival, the medieval spectacle, the Christmas market or theme days. There are also regular show feedings, bird of prey flight shows and other animal experiences, which you can also book individually.
About the history of the Sababurg Animal Park
In 1571, Landgrave Wilhelm IV began to establish the animal park, one of the first premises in Europe, at the foot of his hunting lodge Sababurg. In the course of its history, the animal park has been used for a variety of purposes. It was for example used as a hunting ground or as a pasture for horses and young cattle. Many testimonies of this long and eventful history have been preserved until today.
