From September 29 to December 18, 2026
Imagine this:
- A new acquisition containing valuable artist books and correspondence arrives at the documenta archive—the restoration team is always on hand to assess its condition and check whether any paper-loving little fish have made themselves at home anywhere.
- Heavy rain threatens to flood the storage rooms. What does the emergency plan look like? Is the archive team prepared to quickly bring the one-of-a-kind collections spanning 70 years of documenta history to safety?
- And how does the archive protect its holdings—including sensitive photographs and films—from the record-breaking temperatures of hot summers like this year’s?
On the occasion of European Restoration Day on October 18, 2026, the year’s final studio exhibition explores what it means for the documenta archive to preserve tangible cultural heritage for future generations. Under the motto “Preserving Cultural Heritage,” the restoration department invites visitors to discover its rich collection through the lens of conservation and to gain a deeper understanding of the daily challenges, working methods, instances of damage, and their remediation.
