The Weidelsburg, built between 1380 and 1430, is now the largest castle ruin in North Hesse. It is located on a steep basalt cone (492m above sea level) and combines late medieval residential and defensive architecture in an ideal form.
The castle still retains high walls, tower remains, gate structures, and outer defensive walls. From afar, the two massive residential towers of the Weidelsburg, symbols of the Wolfhagen region, can be seen. The East Tower offers a magnificent view over the landscape of the Habichtswald Nature Park with its characteristic basalt peaks.
Numerous long-distance hiking trails - Bonifatiusweg (X12), Studentenpfad (X13), Habichtswaldsteig, Märchenlandweg, Hugenotten-und Waldenserpfad - lead to the castle.
Experience with us: With the information and guide system (1 main and 10 station panels), visitors can explore the castle independently. There is also an information hut with a kiosk and shelter in case of bad weather. Castle tours can be booked upon request.
Opening hours:
The Weidelsburg is accessible year-round. During winter, the ascent to the platform in the East Tower may be closed. The kiosk is open from April to October, every first Sunday of the month, and on holidays from 11:00 to 16:00. The opening hours may vary depending on weather conditions. They offer coffee, tea, cakes, cold drinks, and alternately grilled or cooked sausages. The exact days and times can be found on their website www.weidelsburg.de or on Facebook.
