Friedrich Kalkbrenner, a pianist born in Kassel, enjoyed great success in London and Paris. Many young people took lessons from him, using the “Handleiter” he had invented. Starting on September 2, the exhibition will showcase Kalkbrenner as an artist, composer, teacher, and businessman.
Starting September 2, 2026

When Friedrich Kalkbrenner was born in Kassel in 1785, his grandfather and father were already well-known in the city as municipal musicians, choir directors, court musicians, or composers. After studying at the conservatories in Vienna and Paris, he became one of the most influential pianists of his time. However, he did not achieve his greatest successes in Kassel but in London and Paris, where many young women and men took lessons from him. His teaching method included the “Handleiter,” a device he developed to help his students learn the correct wrist position.

Get to know Kalkbrenner: as an artist, composer, teacher, and, last but not least, as a businessman!
