Südstadt: Artistic and flourishing.

In the south town of Kassel you can perfectly combine art and nature experience:

City, park, river: The Südstadt has many faces and is one of the most multifaceted districts of Kassel. Along the Frankfurter Straße stretch nested residential areas, which are characterized by many green spaces and a mix of Art Nouveau and post-war buildings. Also here you will find the Kassel Academy of Fine Arts and numerous galleries. The green heart of the district is the Karlsaue. It extends to the Fuldaufer, which is a popular meeting point with its many cafes and boathouses. The Auebad also invites you to refresh yourself. To the southwest, Kassel s most important sports facilities line up with the ice and large sports hall as well as the Auestadion. Part of the park Schönfeld with the Botanical Garden is also part of the Südstadt.

The Karlsaue: constantly new highlights

A “work of art” of a special kind and also part of the southern city is the Karlsaue. It is next to the Bergpark Kassel's second Baroque landscape park. Here, idyllic paths along artfully laid out still waters invite you to take long walks that immerse you in the princely past of Kassel. Have you passed Jupiter on your way? There is also a planetary hiking trail here, which makes the gigantic dimensions of the solar system experienceable. Speaking of planets: In the baroque Orangery castle at the northern end of the park, you can visit the baroque marble bathroom as well as the Astronomical-Physical Cabinet and take a trip to the stars in Hesse's largest planetarium. At the other end of the park you will find the Flower Island Siebenbergen. It is considered a pearl of garden art and houses over 100 different plant species from all over the world.

Südstadt-Galleries: Fresh from the Atelier

Numerous galleries and project rooms of artists have settled in the vicinity of the Kassel Kunsthochschule, which is located in the immediate vicinity of Karlsaue. Here you can discover current trends in contemporary art and get in touch with gallery owners and creatives, for example in Galerie Rasch or the “Warte für Kunst”. Once a year, the Kassel Galeriefest also invites you to take an inspiring tour of the southern part of the city. Along Frankfurter Straße, galleries, shops and studios present exhibitions until late into the evening as well as a colourful accompanying programme with performances, readings, concerts and more.
