Approximately 1,000 students, including master students, are enrolled in the degree programmes Fine Arts, Visual Communication, Product Design, Art Education and Art Science. The interdisciplinary approach of the programme offers students the opportunity to develop their knowledge across disciplines.
For all thought and work processes, the KhK offers its students 14 interdisciplinary study workshops and thus continues the traditions of the Bauhaus by combining craftsmanship and artistic skills. The "nucleus" of today's art academy is "L'Académie de Peinture et de Sculpture de Cassel", founded in 1777. As early as the 18th century, important artists such as Johann Tischbein the Elder taught here. In the course of its more than 230-year history, the KhK has undergone many changes, responded to the currents of the time in its teaching and influenced the education at other art academies with new pedagogical approaches. The documenta founder Arnold Bode taught at the KhK. Some of those who studied here in the past are now among the world's most renowned artists, such as Hans Haacke or Michael Buthe, whose works have been shown several times at the documenta. The pearl pattern design of the bubble bottles was developed in the 1970s by Günter Kupetz, who taught product design in Kassel. Karl Oskar Blase was involved in documenta several times with his graphic design. Twice already, the Oscar for animated film went to students of the Kunsthochschule Kassel.
Every year, the KhK's tour and exam exhibition take place. In addition, the students contribute to the cultural life of the city through numerous individual projects and exhibition spaces.
