The annual Salatkirmes in Ziegenhain is held to commemorate the merry eating of salads, to which the landgrave invited the farmers in 1728 to eat potatoes with salad in order to persuade them to grow potatoes. Over time, this has developed into a large folk festival with music and dancing as well as the traditional amusement park. The highlights include the Kirmesansingen on the historic parade ground on Wednesday, the Schwälmer "Lattch-Essen" in the festival tent on Thursday, the Ziegenhain duck race with great prizes on Thursday, the "Ziegenhain Evening" with a keg tapping and welcome on Friday, the big procession on Sunday and a live concert on Sunday evening. The Salatkirmes in Schwalmstadt Ziegenhain takes place every year 14 days after Whitsun.
