When, around 1780, the hayfields on the Kratzenberg were cleared to create a park for everyone, it was an absolute novelty for Kassel. City architect Johann Wolff had meandering paths laid out and fruit trees planted. An inn was also established. Other designers followed, such as the Schelhase nursery, whose measures even turned the grove into an art garden in the meantime. The people, however, came gladly and in droves. For with industry, urban life also grew in Kassel and brought forth the Sunday excursionists who swarmed into the greenery with their families on their days off from work. The Tannenwäldchen was given its present character in 1961 by the city garden director von Eichel-Streiber, who lightened the evergreen conifers with various deciduous trees and equipped the park with a children's playground. Walking, jogging or cycling, one can reach Kirchditmold through the long stretch of forest and meadows. Residents have a relaxing green space right at their doorstep. For children and young people, a great area opens up for playing and roaming.
