The primeval forest Sababurg is one of the highlights in the nature park Reinhardswald. Gnarled, old hute oaks, meter-high bracken and mystical structures made of dead wood can be marveled at here.
The primeval forest Sababurg has been under protection since 1907 and is the oldest protected area in Hesse. The primeval forest Sababurg is originally a man-made forest, which was created for the Hute (forest pasture). The old hute oaks, which today make up the special charm, originate from this time. They already attracted painters like Theodor Rocholl (1854 - 1933). He was also instrumental in placing the primeval forest under protection. For more than 100 years, the forest has been left to its own devices on an area of 92 hectares, creating a fascinating landscape with special flora and fauna.
Giant trees, bracken, deadwood & Co.
The primeval forest Sababurg is the habitat of an extraordinary animal and plant world. In addition to the impressive hute oaks, which can be up to 600 years old (some are said to be as old as 1,000 years), beech, hornbeam, birch and the bracken fern, which can grow up to two meters high, grow here. Fallen or dead trees remain as deadwood in the unmanaged forest. The extraordinarily high proportion of deadwood here represents the actual ecological capital of the primeval forest. It provides a habitat for fungi, lichens and more than 2,000 insect species, which is very rare elsewhere. Around 450 beetle species have been identified in the primeval forest, almost one-fifth of which are endangered nationwide. The thick trunks in particular offer typical primeval forest relict species, such as the hermit, the best conditions and living conditions.
Legends, myths & stories
With its bizarre formations of trees, roots and deadwood, the primeval forest Sababurg also provides a backdrop for stories, myths and legends from the region. Giants and princesses are said to have lived here and can still sometimes be seen. The castle where Sleeping Beauty slept is also just a walk away. Maybe you will even meet Knight Dietrich or one of the enchanted princesses during your tour through the primeval forest...
Hiking
Three marked circular trails wind through the primeval forest Sababurg on narrow paths. Wooden footbridges cross sensitive areas and guide you to the most spectacular giant trees. Leaving the paths is prohibited for the protection and preservation of the primeval forest. Sturdy shoes are recommended at any time of the year.
