history
Wilhelmshöhe Palace houses several museums and collections: In the central section, the famous Old Masters Picture Gallery, the Collection of Classical Antiquities and the Prints and Drawings Department.
Imperial residence - royal prison

Wilhelmshöhe Palace was built in several stages from 1786 under Landgrave Wilhelm IX. Before that, an Augustinian monastery and later a hunting lodge had already stood on the same site. The middle part of the castle in particular was completely destroyed during the Second World War. Between 1968 and 1974, the building was rebuilt and converted for museum use.

Different collections under one roof
Today, Wilhelmshöhe Palace houses an antiquities collection, the Old Masters Picture Gallery, the graphics collection and a library. In addition, the museum offers space for special exhibitions.
