Unterneustadt

historical city centre
The cradle of the urban area east of the Fulda lies in the Unterneustadt; the district dates back to a new foundation in the high Middle Ages.
Where Kassel's East Begins

Since the end of the 1990s, a modern residential quarter has been developed here directly on the river and in the immediate vicinity of the city centre. To the north and south of it, there are residential quarters with buildings from the 19th and earlier 20th centuries, interspersed with post-war buildings.

The district as a whole extends in a more or less broad, elongated strip along the right bank of the river. In the south, it merges into the Fulda-Aue leisure and recreation area, here - in the middle of the city - there are some fields, market gardens and larger allotment gardens. To the north, beyond the harbour, the picture is similar; on the city border with the neighbouring municipality of Niestetal-Sandershausen there are also fields and Fulda-Auen. To the east of the residential areas there are also commercial areas, which merge with those of the neighbouring industrial site of Bettenhausen.
