The Spohr Monument on Opera Square
The imposing Palais Waitz von Eschen, which was destroyed in the Second World War, once stood where the C&A department store is located today. The former court theater of Kassel once stood on the current site of the Galeria department store. This was demolished in 1910 and replaced by a new building, which was located at the current site of the documenta Halle on the Karlsaue. The Spohr monument, erected in 1883, is now located on the Opernplatz. It is dedicated to the Kassel composer, conductor and music teacher Louis Spohr (1784-1859). He is considered one of the most important German composers of the 19th century and was also internationally successful as a celebrated violin virtuoso. The city of Kassel's music academy is named after him. You will also find the Spohr Museum in Palais Bellevue.
