To mark the 100th birthday of Hans Hillmann (1925-2014), the documenta archiv Kassel is presenting a studio exhibition that pays tribute to the multifaceted work of the internationally renowned graphic designer, illustrator and university lecturer. For decades, Hillmann shaped the visual culture of the Federal Republic of Germany with his important film posters, his innovative book illustrations and his groundbreaking graphic novel Fliegenpapier.
Hillmann became famous in the 1950s for his posters, which he designed for more than 150 films. These included the works of well-known directors such as Jean-Luc Godard, Luis Buñuel and Akira Kurosawa. To this day, his works are considered milestones in poster art.
On display are original posters, drawings, book illustrations and unpublished material from the artist's estate. The works reflect the versatility of Hans Hillmann - from his early film posters to free drawings with surreal motifs.
