Elisabethkirche (church)

church
The Elisabethkirche, located in the city centre, focuses on cultural events in addition to its community work. Art exhibitions, concerts, dance theatre and other events contribute to the diversity of Kassel's cultural landscape.
The Elisabethkirche is not only a place for the faithful, but also for those interested in culture. The Catholic church on Friedrichsplatz sees itself as a "cultural church" where music and art can be experienced.

The man-sized sculpture by the sculptor Stephan Balkenhol can be seen from afar in the open air space under the roof of the church tower. Inside, the listed Bosch-Bornefeld organ resounds: the Elisabethkirche is a place of experimentation and cooperation with musicians from the University of Kassel, the State Theatre, the Kassel Music Days and the "Louis Spohr" Music Academy. The concert series and individual events by various choirs, singers and instrumentalists demonstrate the great diversity of church music.

Since documenta 11 (2012), accompanying exhibitions by contemporary artists have also been held in the house of worship. The diocese of Fulda and the Catholic Church in Kassel took the documenta year 2017 as an opportunity to open a separate space for contemporary art. In addition to a spatial installation by the Berlin artist Anne Gathmann, there was a concert series in the church by students of the music academy of the city of Kassel "Louis Spohr" and lectures as well as public discussions on topics from art and life.
