Nordholland: Unpolished and colorful.

Now it’s going to be colourful: Nordholland

Colourful facades and creative minds: not far from the University of Kassel, the northern city – also known as “North Holland” due to its proximity to the Holländische Straße – pulsates with urban life. With street art projects such as KolorCubes or Urbane Experimente, the Kulturzentrum Schlachthof and the punk rock bar Mutter, Kassel subculture is at home here. But also connoisseurs will get their money's worth in the Nordstadt, because here you will also find Kassel's honey manufactory and the Steckenpferd brewery near the horse market.

Experience urban art up close

For many years there has been a lively graffiti and street art scene in Kassel, which leaves its mostly brightly coloured traces in many parts of the city. The “epicentre” of spray-can artists can be found in the northern city of Kassel, where the street art and graffiti projects Kolor-Cubes e. V. and Urbane Experimente e. V. are at home. Together with international street art artists, KolorCubes has already created more than 30 large-format murals, from which a veritable “Public Art Gallery” has been created. In Urbane Experimente e. V. , students from different faculties have joined forces to use untapped potentials in public spaces – such as the underpass at Holländischer Platz. Even in Nordstadtpark and on the Uni-Campus, colourful works of art shine in front of you from afar.

New horizons of experience

At least as diverse as the culinary offer in the northern city of Kassel is the cultural “menu” that you can enjoy here. The Schlachthof Cultural Centre alone usually hosts concerts, readings, movie evenings and other events several times a week – in summer you can experience many of them in the BOREAL beer garden. A varied cultural programme awaits you all year round at the dyery, the cultural centre of the University of Kassel. If you prefer to party with Mother, you should not miss a visit to the punk rock bar of the same name right next to Nordstadtpark. The Kulturwerkstatt Karnak sees itself as a free space for local and international artists, which also hosts a wide range of cultural events from jazz and punk to panel discussions.
